Miyamoto Musashi against Sasaki Kojiro 
La battaglia più famosa tra sumurai fu quella che ebbe luogo il 13 aprile del 1612 tra Miyamoto Musashi e Sasaki Kojiro, in una piccola isola dello stretto di Kannon (tra le isole di Kyushu e Honshu) chiamata Isola Ganryu 巌流.
Musashi rimase organo da piccolo e fu educato da uno zio monaco che cli insegnò le tattiche della guerra. A 13 anni fece il suo primo combattimento nel quale uccise l'avversario, a 16 anni cominciò a viaggiare per tutto il Giappone compattendo. Viveva in condizioni precarie ed il suo unico aim was to improve the technique of the sword. Even
Kojiro showed his skill by winning several duels and forming a school. He was appointed chief of the fiefs of northern Kyushu. There are different versions as was the duel between two samurai. One is that hearing about Musashi Kojiro wanted to challenge him. Another version is that he was hired to kill Musashi Kojiro. It is said that Musashi arrival at the duel with a three hour delay, a technique used to try the patience of the enemy. Kojiro enraged when he launched with his special technique (the "tsubame Kaeshi" 燕返し) Musashi struck him first with his bokken (wooden sword). Another version says that Kojiro was molte volte sul punto di vincere però il riflesso del sole gli faceva perdere di vista il nemico. Kojiro viene ricordato ancora oggi soprattutto per questa battaglia, Musashi invece contintuò a viaggiare per il Giappone fino al compimento dei 50 anni. C'è anche un Manga in suo onoro chiamato "Vagabondo".
